P ortla n d , South P ortla n d , and W estbrook; and the towns o f Cape E lizab eth , C u m ­
b erla n d , F alm ou th , G orh a m , S ca rb orou g h , and Y arm ou th in C um berland County).
The su rvey was m ade as part o f the B ureau o f L a b or S tatistics* annual area
wage su rv ey p r o g r a m .
The p r o g r a m is design ed to y ie ld data fo r individual
m etrop olita n a r e a s , as w ell as national and re g io n a l estim a tes fo r all Standard
M etropolitan A re a s in the United S tates, exclu din g A laska and H aw aii, (as defined
by the U .S . O ffice o f M anagem ent and Budget through N ov em b er 1971).
A m a jo r co n s id e ra tio n in the a rea wage su rv ey p r o g r a m is the need to
d e s c r ib e the le v e l and m ovem en t o f wages in a v a rie ty o f la b o r m a rk e ts, through
the an alysis o f (l) the le v e l and d istribu tion o f w ages by o ccu p a tion , and (2) the
m ovem en t o f w ages by occu p ation al ca te g o ry and s k ill le v e l.

v elop s in form a tion that m ay be u sed fo r m any p u r p o s e s , including wage and sa la ry
ad m in istra tion , c o lle c tiv e barg ain in g , and a s sista n ce in d eterm in in g plant l o c a ­

wage d eterm in a tion s under the S e r v ice C on tract A ct o f 1965.
