LIBRARY OF CONGRESS A LIST OF WOKKS KELATING TO THE FIRST AND SECOND BANKS OF THE UNITED STATES WITH CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF REPORTS, ETC., CONTAINED IN THE AMERICAN STATE PAPERS AND IN THE CONGRESSIONAL DOCUMENTS COMPILED UNDER THE DIRECTION OP APPLETON PRENTISS CLARK GRIFFIN CHIEF BIBLIOGRAPHER WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE. 1908 L. C. card, S-35005 11 PREFATORY NOTE This List has been compiled with a view to indicate material complementary to that given in the recent list on currency. Some of the proposals for revision of our currency system provide for central banks of issue. These being somewhat analogous to the old Bank of the United States, and the history of that bank therefore illustrative, the List notes many titles dealing with it; also contemporary discussions; but it does not go so far as to include biographies of the chief actors in the controversy regarding it. The American Statesmen Series includes many of these biographies, and the general index to the Series under the heading " Bank of the United States " will guide to the pertinent material. As noted on the title-page, documentary material contained in the American State Papers and in the Congressional documents forms a separate section of the List. The documents cover the period from 1780-1838, and include references to debates as printed in the Annals of Congress. A. P. C.
