Sales of two mail order houses averaged 8 p e r cent l a r g e r than in September of 1926 and those of e i g h t f i v e - a n d - 1 e n - o e n t s t o r e s were about 11 p e r cent l a r g e r . While f o r the country a s a whole s a l e s of department s t o r e s wore in about the same volume a s i n September of l a s t y e a r , they were l a r g e r i n the Boston, Now York, A t l a n t a and San Francisco Foderal r e s e r v e d i s t r i c t s , in the P h i l a d e l p h i a , Cleveland, Richmond; S t . Louis, Kansas City and D a l l a s Federal r e s e r v e d i s t r i c t s s a l e s woro s m a l l e r , while i n the Chicago and Minnea p o l i s d i s t r i c t s they were in about the same volume a s in September of l a s t y o a r . Of the t o t a l number of s t o r e s (551) r e p o r t i n g f o r the country as a whole 250 showed l a r g e r s a l e s and 301 showed smallor s a l e s than a yoar ago.
