Dear Win:
Ever since I learned of your arrival back in this
country I have been hoping to run into you down here.
Please be sure and let me know when you are next in
town. As one who had a great interest in your mani
fold responsibilities in London, I would like to say
that I think you did one of the outstanding jobs done
by any civilian of this war and stayed with it until
it was finished despite what might without exaggeration
be termed distractions.
I believe that relatively there
was a greater advance in this war over the past in the
field of economic warfare than in weapons or tactics,
and I think a very large measure of the advance was due
to your imagination and grasp of the problem. When I
am next in Princeton 1 shall certainly plan to drop in
on you, and I hope you will let me know when you are in
town.
Sincerely yours,

\P .

Col. John Easton
Office of Military Attache
American $a^as«y,
LOIDOS, Sng laM

Dear John*
I have your letter of J a n u a ry 17th and have done my best to go
over th© name a.
As far aft th e top decfo of MSW ie concerned* I
vorked nearly as closely with Lord.Drogheda and Lard Selboume as
with D ingle
X think it woald 1)6 h a rd to d is tin g u is h between
them , although i f only one is chosen, D ingle J-jo't was th e one with
vfoora we had most int imate contact.
At the next le v e l come Lord 2'inley, Lord Jarrar and S ir Lionel
Cohen. Justice yor%«n I would put somewhat after them. Lionel Cohen
is particularly important because he was the responsible contact of
KJBW with American personnel. In the e a r ly days a l l the contact prac
tically was with him, and he deserves much of the credit for the wide
range-of general contact that we had. Somewhere in the above ^roup
I would put Col. Viekert.
Our contact was intimate*
At the immediate day-to-day working level there were Derrick
Seobohn, Jack Kichols, Jerry V illiere, and Jack Troutbeck.
Of the
remainder, on the Blockade side, 1 would r*te the closeness of con
tact somewhat rs follows: £. K. Bliss, Anthony Lausada, J. I . Cehan,
Baker, J . B. Linden, Geoffrey Gibbs and Harold Abrahams. Parallel
tft them on the Intelligence side there was 0. L . Lawrence, burner,
0w*n (very important in A fr ic a ), Wood and probably Watson. The
list you sent me also includes the name of Col. Bebb. He spent most
of his time la Washington and X suppose will be cited from there, but
should not be overlooked. He was extremely active in his contact
with Americans.
It would be a grand gesture to recognize Miss Solomon.
My very best to you. The telegraph strike held up Don Calder’ s
cable announcing his marriage until the other day. That was one event
that I deserved to be present at.
Sincerely,

Dear 7/in,
As I mentioned in ay recent letter to you Don Gaidar,
Avery P e te rs o n , and i t s e l f have been ta lk in g o v e r tb e ja a tte r of
decorations for certain members of Ji.fi.Vi. who worWj p a r t i c u l a r l y
c lo s e w ith us a t 40 B e rk e le y . »,e have c o n c e n tra te d our selection
to a r e l a t i v e l y s n a il group that neets thitf re q u ire m e n t# . This does
not mean that we have made the t e n t a t i v e selections or: the basis
o f r e l a t i v e im p o rtan ce of the in d iv id u a l in
il.ii.W. O rg a n is a tio n
b u t r a t h e r on th e c lo s e nature of t^e c o n ta c t with u s .
Ion m entioned th e f a c t that th e I n i t i a t i v e would in any
e v en t have tb coxue ^ron» the Ambassador. This i j not ^ u i t e the case
as the U.S, Array has p ro v id e d a decoration, The Uedal of Freedom
in v a ry in g degrees, for ■foreign civilian personnel and has asked
for recojum endations. A c tu a lly any recofaetendations which would be
made would have to be over the signature of General Tindall, the
Military Attache, with su p p o rtin g c e r t 3 f i c a t e r of citation from
A very, Don, and inyself, ’/.ho are still i n th e Smbasey. F in al. approval
ho':;ev -r, ’-vould be given by the Ambassador b e fo re forwarding to
W ashington.
So far the three of ’.is have agreed rhole h e a r te d ly or
Dingle (G old P a lm ) , Derrick Seebohns (Silver Palm), Cecil Farrar
(Silver Pal/r.). In addition we believe that Ernest 31iss (Silver
Palm) should probably be included, al^c Justice H orton (Silver Palu)
who ras and still is Chairman o f the Blacklist Committee. Avery
feels strongly that Cahan and Baker as members of the B la c k lis t
Section of li.E.iiJ. should be included since they wer^ tho O f f ic e r s
handling the Liaison with the W ashington Proclaimed List Coumitt-ee,
Vie had discussed possibilities o f recowending Geffry Gibbs (Silver
Palia) , The JSarl of Selborne(Gold P a in ), Justice Lionel. Cohen (Silver
Flam), and Toia Dolan (Bronze Palm)^ who h an d led th e Mechanical Day
to Day P ro c e s sin g o f Navicerts, b u t have n o t as y e t agreed c o m p letely
on th e s e names. VSe would of course have recommended Justice Finlay
(Silver Palm) b u t as you probably know he died recently as a result
of a germ picked up during his visit +o the Baleen Prison Carsp.
