1 November 1944 Captain Stanley R. Jacobs Company A ~ Detachment 11 - A-2 2nd European Civil Affairs Regiment A.P.O. 658 ~ c/o Postmaster New York, N. Y. Dear Stanley: I was glad to receive through your mother your new address. I an certain you must be seeing a great deal of the actual fighting these days and as such, have a favored position I am very glad that your moral has improved so much and will look forward to hearing all about your adventures when you return. Things continue to be all messed up back here and you are particularly fortunate not to be down on Wall Street again. I saw your picture in the New York Journal American one day and think it was a pretty good likeness. I made my first trip back to New York a couple of weeks ago and saw many of our old friends, who asked to be remembered to you. Everyone is quite cheerful and hopeful about the end of the war despite Mr. Churchill's dire predictions. We will all be glad to have the election over and forgotten and will look forward to 1948 with more zeal and pleasure. I hp lly because that mast ck here indicate Paris has been the least touched by the war than any of the large capitals and it really is a beautiful place, isn't it? I think we are all slowly going down the painful road to totalitarianism. If this is the choice of the people, we must abid by their decision. As you know, I regret it very much but perhaps we will be just as happy under the new order. At least we may as wel1 hope so because their isn't much any of us can do about it and at least until we get out of uniform. I expect your knowledge of French is coming in handy now and hope they will use you to the fullest possible extent. ~2~ I wrote to our friend, Charlie Saltzman to look you up if he gets up that way. However, he is down near Bologna in Italy, so I am doubtful if you meet. With all good wishes Sincerely yours, WILLIAM M. MARTIN, JR., Lt. Colonel, Infantry, A. U. S.
