SELECTIVE

SERVICE SYSTEM

LOCAL BOARD NO. 144
Public School No. 225
Ocean View Ave. Nr. B. 12th St
BROOKLYN, N. Y , .
(STAMP OF LOCAL BOARD)

April 10th, 1941.

Mr. William C. Martin, Jr.
President, New York Stock Exchange,
Wall Street, New York City.
Dear Sir:
As chairman of a local draft board, and a former World
War veteran, I cannot help but to express my sincere admirations for you as you are about to be inducted into
the United States Army.
You indeed deserve the deepest gratitude of all the American people inasmuch as you did not request any preferential treatment or deferment.
Othersin[a]less important and prominent positions than yours
would have been tempted to seek special privileges or
favors. I believe you can make a worthy contribution to
the multitudes of registrants and selectees who are about
to serve and are serving their nation, by issuing a statement of your personal feelings and mental reactions which
prompted you to take this courageous step at such a tremendous sacrifice.
An expression of some of your observations at this time,
would tend to serve a noble purpose and would assist in
aiding immeasureably the building up of morale in our Selective Service program.
May I p e r s o n a l l y c o n g r a t u l a t e you, and wish you t h e b e s t
of l u c k .
R e s p e c t f u l l y yours,
Henry Modell, Chairman,
Local Draft Board, #144

P.S.You are liberty to use part or all of this letter as
you see fit.
