Dear Dr. Nourse:
I have been increasingly aware of your desire
to retire from the work of the Council of Economic Advisers.
Twice since you presented your letter of resignation on
December llĀ±, 19U8, you have reiterated your desire to leave.
The activity under your charge represented a
pioneer effort to provide, within the Executive Office,
advice and assistance to the President on economic matters.
The pioneering phase has now largely passed and I feel,
therefore, that I must assent to your request to be
relieved of your duties as of November first.
With my thanks and my appreciation of the valuable
service you have rendered, and all good wishes, I am
Verv sincerelv vours.

Honorable Edwin G. Nourse,
Chairman,
Council of Economic Advisers,
Executive Office of the President,
Washington, D. C.
