MUSKOGEE,

OKLAHOMA

May 1, 1959

Hon. Robert L. Owen,
Washington, B. C.
Hear Senator Owen:
As you know, I have been digging into Oklahoma
history and writing for a good many years, and have
accumulated a valuable library to assist me in this
work. In my library are an almost complete set of
reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Most
of my work relates to the period before the Civil War;
but during the past year I have been working on a
History of Oklahoma, which has brought me down through
the time of your service as Indian Agent, and naturally
I have had occasion to read carefully all of your reports
to the commissioner of Indian Affairs. For many years
I have been familiar with these reports, and have often
said that they were the best, the most lucid, the most
informing reports made by any Indian agent I knew of.
Lately, as I have found occasion to depend more than
ever before on the contents of these reports, I have felt
so much indebted to you for the care with which you marĀ
shalled events and conditions that came under your obserĀ
vation, that I have.wanted to express my appreciation to
you. I have a feeling, also, that they are not only of
value to me, but wherever these reports can be seen by
students in any library fortunate enough to possess them,
your work will be of the greatest value in the study of
the history of the people and the period described by them.
I trust you and Mrs. Owen are enjoying good health.
Mrs. Foreman joins me in kindest regards to you both.
