Miss Anderson, Woman in Industry Division, Southrn Building, 15th and H Streets, Washington, D.C. My dear Miss Anderson: Your letter relative to the little story about the Negro women at the Bureau should have been answered before this. The story is a typical example of a lack of present day point of view on the part of the writer and an indication, it seems to me, of the need of,-shall I say, educational propaganda certainly among Negro women. Thankin you for your frank expression, Yours sincerely, ERH.1:LC PP, https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis J ix .e in tember th6 1.2th of the TrAir re ;ort indee,:i vt,ry w the -iure .12 ejrisTosisploy • 1116 ty?e :.rt, in the 3ureLlu of :4s:ivini, the .111 -14bte.i.ly r ' ,Any ArfjrnIZeTit I note wi-t.h 71•:. ths.t ....Nor time work is being cine in the :sur6:..k.1 t I rt,:f. to '1. very extent,. time -31•:‘ -sto:.) +she ..)ver .he . time 3y p.,7.1.6 so Low ttrtt the 1.1 c wiete for the zble tc, contintie, tthez h.:ur3 if this endint, wEA-f": :11)i° to c;Drivinc,,, .frir t tilers thIlt .- 4cre thV3 bure.7,u t,h -Lne &:ffoct that moricf3rP in cener :. if t,he 3vc.rt.ilse 7.1•;,f, n;,4 nc:w receiving Vvry https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis DEPARTMENT OF LABOR OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY WASHINGTON SepteMbor l, 1918. :ass Mary Anderson Assistant Diractor Woman in Industry Sorvice Tashington, D.C. :iTy dear Miss Anderson: Enclosed you will find a short but rathor interesting story, it seams to me, gotten at the Bureau. L y visit down there was very delightful and encouraging. I met some fine people Yours s (Mr • Empic rcly, DEPARTMENT OF LABOR OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY WASHINGTON EFFICIMMY 2 - LUS SPflIT CI SETIVICM Bureau of Engraving In visiting the Bureau of lIngraving the other day, a visitor discovered some remarkable examples of patriotism of Yegro women in industry. Among them was Mrs. Anna R. Grant, a rogro expert currency examiner. She did three peoples work for more than a week during the recent currency rush. More than once she went on at 8:00 a. m., worked all day an all night, until 12:00 the next day; ,staid off that afternoon for rest and went an again that night. From July o September, she has beon of inestimable assistance to those in charge by relieving other girls. She is to all in the Bureau, regardless of race, an example of rare efficiency and fine spirit. Yrs. Grant's husband is in Prance. The Yegro girls as a whole in the Bureau are very satisfactory. They complain less than the other girls. There is less insubordination amok: them. They are just as neat and tidy and healthy as the other girls, but as a Large group they aro not as well educated. https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
