For the attention of the Hon* See** Honorable and Dear Sirs:retary of Agriculture. David S. Hens ton. She carriage and buggy industry of Cincinnati and surrounding territory, meaning within a radius of SGO miles, is one where the in«* vestment reaches to ^10,000,000#00 to $12 ,000,000f00 and the annual product from these numerous factories runs well into several million dollars, and goes largely into the farmer's hands of the central states, western states, southern and southwestern states, even as far as the most southern points of Texas. She Carriage Maker's Club, the oldest business organization of this city, composed of 170 members, directly interested in this in dustry, understanding fully the benefits that the farmer is to terive from the Regional Bank and lew Gurreny Bill, unanimously adopted at it’s regular monthly meeting held yesterday, a resolution indorsing in fullest measure, the city of^Oincinnat^ as a point best suited for the establishment of a Regional fSBI’^ W W & q u e s t that when the investigation of Cincinnati is made by the Commission, looking to the establishment of a Regional Bank in this section, that the matter of this large product, and the fact that it goes into farmerTs hands, be given due consideration• We are the nearest large city to the center of population in the United States. Twenty million of the, people of this country live within a radius of three hundred miles of Cincinnati. We are located _ near the tiorier of three great srates. We^are the gate-way to the South by both rail land water. When the locks and dams, now under construction in the Ohijo ifiver are completed^ Cincinnati as a manufacturing city will have a location second to none. If a new bank were starting in a town, they would want to be located on the most central corner, in order that the bank would be con▼enient aid thereby secure more easily the largest amountof business, in order thaFdividends might he paid in suitable amount on their stock. Should the Honorable Committee feel ' inclined to favor another city in the State of Ohio as a better location for a Regional Bank, then the next favorable location would be Louisville, Ky., a city that is in close relationship with Southern territory and where the -revenue of the government is very heavy. While I am the more interested in Cincinnati, I mention Louisville as deserving of your consideration should Cincinnati be deciiiwd as not the proper location. I am Respectfully yours, to The Hon. January 9, 1914. Hon# Wm. Gr. Me Ado o, Secretary of the Treasury, Washington, D. G. Sir: I have no interest, directly or indirectly, in any tank except as a depositor, and forty years c attention to public matters gives me fair qualifi to base an opinion upon the subject of the locatio one of the new Regional Banks. I presume that the test w ill narrow to a selection of either Cincinnat Cleveland, and further presume that the Senators fr Ohio w ill naturally exert their influence in favor their home or near home city , Cleveland. Cleveland is the center of no-where, because it has nothing to the north, and its a ffilia tio n s are more largely with the east and Chicago. For four or five decades the center of popu lation of the country has been within a hundred m iles, or nearer, to Cincinnati, and the center of population is now, and has been practically stationary near Col umbus, Indiana, fo;r three decades. The center of manu facturing of the United States has been, for several de cades, coming from a north or northeasterly direction to wards Cincinnati. Geographically Cincinnati is so located as to be practically in the center of the middle west. Those of you who w ill have the fin al selection in this matter can not on research find any city in the land, the record of whose banking institutions is higher as respects conservatism and safety than those of Cincin\ These items alone, it would seem ought to TDQintMio Cincinnati as the logical city in which to loc ate on4 oi7 these proposed banks, and the reasons recited are nolj those which require argument, but are cold, uncontroijertable facts. I am, S ir , with great respect, Very sincerely yoursf 1 11 ............................... - Reproduced from the Unclassified I Declassified Holdings of the National Archives Form 22 89 B NIQHT LETTER THE WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH COMPANY INCORPORATED <>|OFFIC|,S IN AMERICA ii CABLE SERVICE TO ALL TH E WORLD This Company and DEJfclVEBS mcssotros only on conditions limiting its-llabillty, which have been assented to by the sender of the following: Night Letter, Errors can be ( st onl.vJmr repeating a message back to the sending' station for comparison, and the Company ■will not hold itself liable for errors or delays in transmission or deli ---------- cpoiitas Nlsrht letters, sent at reduced rates, beyond a sum eqnal to the amount paid for transmission; nor in any case beyond the sum of 'r , fty Dollars, nt iyi. uflesa otlierjnse stated below, this message has been valued by the sender thereof, nor in any case where the claim is not presented in writing within y days ati*i i is filed iff tit the Company for transmission. RUST, Superintendent v.,h Dear Sur: A* one of the corporations interested in Ohio, we would most respectfully ask that one of the regional banks be located in the City of Cincinnati, Ohio* We think that no other place should receive as much consideration as Cincinnati for this section of the country* The entire Miami Valley does its banking business in that city , together with practically two-thirds of Ohio, nearly a ll of Kentucky and a great deal of Indiana. Tributory to this region is located a great number of excellent cities and the location of a regional bank at Cincinnati would make it convenient for those places. Among these can be named Canton, Youngstown, Steubenville, Columbus, Toledo, Lima, Dayton, Akron, Middletown, Greenville, Hamilton, and In Indiana the cities of Anderson, Muncie, New Castle, Indianapolis, Logansport, and a host of others that would be in easy reach of this center. Another argument is that it is near the center of the population of the United States and would be probably the most conviently located of any regional bank that could be placed for the service of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Hon. .Win. G. MeAdoo, !| Washington D .C . :Dear S i r :1 On Jan. 14, 1914 at a meeting of the Board of Directors of 1The.Peoples National Bank of G reenfield,0 . , resolutions were regularly ia d o p t e d a ooefftrhig ■ frlie par0vi a iTOTrTT'TTTg* Fe der al Reserve Act. The Directors further passed resolutions injrhich Cincinnati__ Ohio was unreservedly endorsed as a location for a R e s ^ v e B W , for the following reaspn^;,-, ---'located as it is , is not only the jgateway from the North to the South, and vice versa, hut it is a pivotal point through which the great supplies of the central :lEast# West, North and South pass. TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES:- THe great trunk lines of the East and West, North and South pass through this city. Traction lines {diverge in every direction. The Ohio river at this point, more than at anjr other, has to do with equalized freight rates and permanent navigable freight stage is an actuality with Oincinnati. INTERNAL INDUSTRIES:Cincinnati teems with manufactories and |wholesale houses. Its Capitalists are enterprising and progressive. Employment for a ll classes at excellent remuneration. This "being a central and divergent point for trunk line railroads which tap the coal fields of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky; the capital of its citizenship interested not only in these railroads, "but also in the mineral wealth of the different States, insure a j! continued attention to these wonderful mineral resources and the further and better development thereof. \ POPULATION:- Cincinnati with its contiguous suburban towns has a population much in excess of one h a lf m illion, and is , practically, a continuous city as far north as Dayton. SUB TREASURY:- This is the location of one of the Sub L’reasurys of the United States, and Cincinnati is the Clearing House of . much of the vast territory North, East, South and West. INTERNAL REVENUE:- The report of the Collector of Internal > Revenue for this district shows:- That the great whiskey output of |territory on either side of the Ohio for miles north and south, use :: Cincinnati as their wareroom, and Cincinnati Banks and Financiers ' have taken care of this great industry in such a manner as to m ilitate both to the interests of the producer and the government. What is said above as to whiskey, applies just as strongly ; to tobacco and the great tobacco fields of Kentucky as well as this rapidly developed industry of Ohio, center in Cincinnati. POSTAL RECEIPTS:- In postal receipts no city in the great Middle West compares with Cincinnati. FARM PRODUCTS:- Cincinnati is part of the wonderful Scioto and Miami valleys. The Muskinghara. valley through the accommoda- : tions of the Ohio river becomes a part thereof. It is located atacentral stock producting point. Its stock markets are unexcelled. Thousands of cattle, hogs, sheep and great supplies of poultry and eggs pass through this market annually. Summarizing, Cincinnati has by reason of the above facts, become a permanent factor in the financial world. As anxjfcliars thereof, numberless banks believing in the future and C incinnati1s continuity in its present financial status, have effected i(relations that, should any other city be chosen as the location of a Regional Reserve Bank, the business of scores of Counties and four or five Sjbates would be thrown into chaos. And we are not wholly se lfish in urging the Reserve Bank Organisation Committee to favorably consider the rightful claims of Cincinnati. The business interests of this section of the country, and a ll territory adjacent to Cincinnati, would much prefer the establishment of a branch at Cincinnati than at Cleveland or Pittsburg. The strategic position of Cincinnati, relative to the South ern trade, should especially command the at tention of the Committee, who w ill establish these branches, it being the gate-way to the commercial interests of the South. We need not remind you that the National banks of Cincinnati have a larger capital stock and surplus, than tftjase of Cleveland, and that a greater number of banks throughout this section of the country, use Cincinnati banks for their correspondents. We as indivinuals would prefer Cincinnati to any otherpoint for the reason of its being easy to reach, either by mail, or transportation. We therefor, kindly request that you give Cincinnati due consideration, before deciding upon either point mentioned above. The Chairman of the Clearing House Association, Cincinnati, Ohio. Dear Sir:~ Referring to the matter of the location of the Regional Banks to be established under the new Federal Reserve System, we beg to advise that we are heartily and un-alterably in favor of your city as being one of the points to be chosen* WB are firm in our b e l ie f that Cincinnati is situated both geographically and commercially so as to be in the best position to serve those included in it s zone of operation better and more satisfactory than any city in the State of Ohio. The location alone convinces us that it could be of more convenient service to a larger f ie l d than any city in the state £ and especially so when considering the limitations of the northern boundry of your only competitor, the .city of Cleveland. The large majority of the business of this in stitution is cleared jrhrough Cincinnati. Practically all ©f our items, excepting New York City and Dayton, are sent to your city banks. A careful estimate shows that considerably more than' One-half m illion dollars in checks and drafts are sent to the banks in your city from this bank in each month. v We want to assure you that we are heartily in fa v o rf>a Regional bank for Cincinnati, and shall be glad to exhaust our personal efforts to bring about 'aj favorable consideration of the same. Chairman, Clearing House Committee, Cincinnati, Ohio, Dear sir:We wish to express to you our desire to co-operate with you in your campaign for the selection of Cincinnati ae a location for a Regional Reserve Bank. We estimate that eighty five percent of our foreign business passes through Cincinnati channels, and it would in convenience ourselves and our customers seriously were it necessary to divert this business to some other City. Our feeling in the matter is not wholly selfish, however, as it appears to us that Cincinnati is the logical town to serve this section of the middle west. The success of the new system will depend largely on its ability to re cruit not only from the National Banks but also from the State Banks and Trust Companies. Its strongest appeal to the be latter class of banks will in the service it can offer them, A and Cincinnati is so located that if can best serve the larg est number of banks in this district.
