KELLEY ATTORNEY GENERAL LANSING. MICHIGAN April 23, 1982 Paul A. Volcker, Chairman Board of Governors of Federal Reserve System Federal Reserve Building 20551 Washington, D. C. 11 Dear Mr. Volcker: Congressman James Blanchard has informed me that he spoke to you recently concerning the National Association of Attorneys General Convention that we are holding this year at Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the host of that convention, I would like you to be our guest to speak to the Attorneys General of every state in the union, as well as the territories. I feel that this is the type of group that would appreciate your message, and be able to readily understand the nature of your public trust. Mackinac Island is a unique place. If you have not had the opportunity to visit here, I think you would appreciate it. Depending on how much time you could be with us, there is great beauty, historical lore, and I could have you taken to fishing grounds within an hour or two of the Island by experts. • Paul A. Volcker Page 2 April 23, 1982 The actual dates of the convention are July 14-18. We would like you to be a speaker on the morning of Satualay, July 17‘; If you can accommodate this visit on your schedule, I am sure that each and every Attorney General of the United States would appreciate it. Transportation Mackinac Island is reached by flying to the nearest airport and taking a limousine to the ferry, which transports passengers to the Island. Following is a breakdown of specific travel arrangements available. The nearest airport to Mackinac Island is Emmet County Airport in Pellston, Michigan. The only scheduled airliner serving the area is Republic Airlines. At the present time it has one direct flight (#597) which departs from Chicago weekdays at 9:35 a.m. and arrives at the Emmet County Airport at 12:02 p.m. Limousine service from the airport to the Mackinaw City boat docks (30-minute ride) will be arranged. Mackinac Island is reached by an 18-minute ferry ride from the Mackinaw City boat docks. Special arrangements for conference participants have been made with Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry (see schedule on enclosed leaflet). The special conference round trip fare will be $4.75 per adult and $3.50 for children (under 11 years old). No reservations are required. There is also an airport on Mackinac Island not served by a commercial airline. Access to the Mackinac Island airport, weather conditions permitting, is via the Emmet County Airport. If there is sufficient interest, efforts will be made to arrange for a non-stop charter flight between Chicago and Pellston. Please indicate your interest on the attached Pre-registration Information Form and an anticipated arrival time in Chicago. The charter planes would hold 50 passengers and would cost S230 round trip. No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island. Storage and services for passenger cars will be handled by the Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry Company during your stay on the Island. Arrangements for automobile rentals (for use before or after the convention) may be made with Hertz Rent-A-Car at the Emmet County Airport. -3- Dress Temperatures of 70-75° are likely during the day, and there is a cool breeze in the evenings. Casual attire (slacks, shorts, swimwear) is appropriate for daytime. The hotel requires coats and ties for men in the evenings, and dresses or dressy pantsuits for women. We hope that you will be able to join us at Mackinac Island. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Ray Marvin at 202/624-5454 or his deputy, Lynne Ross at 202/624-5456; or Rick Masters or Mary Jilka at 606/252-2291. L1Qj82 dAMES J. Volcker Chairman Board of Governors Federal Reserve Building Washington, D.C. 0551 3:11 , 913 73 Pursuant to my phone call of today, this letter is a reminder that you will be receiving an invitation to speak to the National Association of Attorneys General on July 17th at Mackinac Island in Michigan. As I mentioned to you, my former boss, Michigan Attorney General Frank Kelley, will be extending the invitation. I took the liberty of informing him that if he could get John Voelker there at Mackinac Island to chat with you, it might be more enticing. I also reminded him that scheduling for top officials in Washington was very difficult and the fact that you would give the invitation careful consideration by no means meant that you would be able to attend. Thanks for taking my call and for your time today. Sincere y , JJB/jbc 7t) P . 7) r" . CD -n ,4 Dear AVM JA rr1 J. BLANCHARD Congressman 1 2 Emerald L 26 5 0 3M 0.
