allowance f o r seasonal v a r i a t i o n s , advanced.

c o a l , p e t r o l e u m , a u t o m o b i l e s , a n d f o o t w e a r was l a r g e r i n J u l y t h a n i n J u n e , w h i l e
a c t i v i t y i n t e x t i l e m i l l s , meat p a c k i n g , and c o p p e r and a n t h r a c i t e m i n e s d e c l i n e d .
Lumber p r o d u c t i o n showed l e s s t h a n t h e u s u a l s e a s o n a l d e c r e a s e .

Steel mill activ-

i t y , w h i l e d u r i n g J u l y was a t an u n u s u a l l y h i g h l e v e l f o r t h e summer s e a s o n , was
well maintained during August.

Weekly r e p o r t s f r o m D e t r o i t f a c t o r i e s show a

l a r g e r volume o f employment i n t h e m i d d l e o f August t h a n a t a n y p r e v i o u s d a t e ,
i n d i c a t i n g t h a t a u t o m o b i l e p r o d u c t i o n c o n t i n u e d l a r g e i n t h a t month.

Building

c o n t r a c t s awarded d e c l i n e d b y somewhat more t h a n t h e u s u a l s e a s o n a l amount i n
J u l y , b u t were l a r g e r t h a n i n any p r e v i o u s J u l y , t h e i n c r e a s e o v e r l a s t y e a r
being c h i e f l y in r e s i d e n t i a l b u i l d i n g .

C o n t r a c t s awarded i n t h e f i r s t two

a s compared w i t h y i e l d s of 1 2 , 9 5 5 , 0 0 0 b a l e s i n 1927 and n e a r l y 1 8 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 b a l e s
i n 1926.

d e c l i n e i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s , and p r a c t i c a l l y no change i n t i m e d e p o s i t s .
Volume of r e s e r v e bank c r e d i t o u t s t a n d i n g showed l i t t l e c h a n g e between J u l y
25 and August 2 2 .

U n i t e d S t a t e s s e c u r i t y h o l d i n g s were p r a c t i c a l l y u n c h a n g e d .

I n c r e a s e d demand

f o r c u r r e n c y , w h i c h i s u s u a l a t t h i s t i m e of t h e y e a r , h a s n o t r e s u l t e d i n an
e q u i v a l e n t g r o w t h i n r e s e r v e b a n k c r e d i t , b e c a u s e i t was o f f s e t i n p a r t by a
d e c l i n e i n r e s e r v e s r e q u i r e d by member b a n k s , which r e f l e c t e d t h e d e c r e a s e i n
their deposits.
There were f u r t h e r i n c r e a s e s between t h e m i d d l e of J u l y and t h e m i d d l e of
August i n o p e n - m a r k e t r a t e s on c o l l a t e r a l l o a n s , commercial p a p e r and b a n k e r s '
acceptances.
