Form No. it;i Office Correspondence T Chairman Eccles FEDERAL RESERVE B0ARD rw J ^ a. 1956 r Subject- Banking criticism of govern- Through some of my banking friends in New York, I learned that an extremely hostile attitude toward FHA had been exhibited at a recent meeting of mutual savings banks in Brooklyn. I suggested to Mr. McDonald that the matter was of sufficient importance for him to send one of his best men ffom Washington to make inquiry about it, and at the request of Mr* McDonald I put Dr* Fisher of the FHA in touch with Stewart Hathaway, who is vice president of the Savings Banks Trust Company and who was here with Mr. Charles Miller when the latter was president of the RFC. Attached is a copy of Dr. Fisherfs report to Mr. McDonald. I would suggest that you read it with particular reference to the comments on the activities of the Federal Savings and Loan Associations in the New York area.
