My fellow Americans:
"Remove not the ancient land-marks which the fathers have s e t t " — Proverb a XXII, 28.
The writer begs you to turn back and carefully examine George Washington1 s
Farewell Address, the teachings of Thcmas Jefferson, for example: "Be are as maniacs
i f we try to make Europe moral or to settle their disputes by warj" the Monroe Doct r i n e , repudiated by FDR i n Congress on January 6, 1941, for his own aggrandizement,
and the address t i t l e d "Preservation of our Institutions," delivered by Abraham
Lincoln at Springfield on January 27, 1837.
The writing of the Constitution of the United States of America was the
greatest human event that has occurred i n the world since the Birth of Christ.
Think frf i t I Our lawmakers swear they w i l l uphold the Constitution. Less than 24
percent have even read i t * Prior to 1890, most 5th grade school children were able
to recite the Constitution and explain i t s passages. Why not now? Our per capita
taxes never reached $5*00 a year. People who should know better advocate or speak of
this Country as a "democracy*" The United States never was a democracy; i s not now.
We live in a REPUBLIC. The t r i a l of Christ i s an outstanding spectacle of the danger of democracy, the w i l l of the mob. They crucified Him. Our fathers 1 Ijoolc t i t led "FEDERALIST" explains every word in the Constitution * I f you w i l l procure a
copy at your bookstore and peruse i t , you should then put a stop to buncombe, dema«*
gogism, controls, international meddling and increasing taxes. And help re store
sanity i n Washington, D. C#, in our domestic and foreign a f f a i r s .
I t becomes increasingly important at this time to learn habitually to distinguish the Government of a nation from i t s Administration. One endures, the other comes and goes* Now, the basis of our particular Government is i t s Constitution.
The Administration includes a l l persons, National, State and local, whose salaries
are paid at taxpayers1 expense, no matter what their Party label or position may be.
Turning to Abraham^Lincoln, who was noted for his precise terminology,
^here i s ah i m p o r t a n t t h e
Government i s distinct from the Administration. (toe i s perpetual, the other tamperary and changeable. A man may be loyal
to his Government, and yet oppose the peculiar principles and methods of the Administration." Forswear the inaccurately and misleadingly called "Supreme Authority"
and i t s dupes. Quoting the late Dr. Nicholas M* Butler, who was in a position to
know: "Peace and democracy are two of the most misused words i n the English language today. Communists, Fabians, their fellow-travellers and their dupes spout
"democracy" from morning t i l night» Defend fair republican form of government and
i t s liberties in name and i n truth. The l i f e of our Republic i s at stake*" Again
quoting Lincoln: "Let the people know the truth and they w i l l save the Country*"

John J. Fleck,

Mr, John J. Fleck,

Philadelphia 24-, Pennsylvania.
Thank you for your letter of February 4, 1951*
Your point that the people must have the truth is i n my
opinion the basis of democratic government. Everything
that you and I can do to make the truth available for
public action i s worth every b i t of trouble and inconvenience that i t may cause.
Sincerely yours,

M. S. Eccles.
