STATE O F ELMER A.BENSON MINNESOTA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE GOVERNOR SAINT PAUL December 27, 1938 Honorable Marriner S. Eccles, Chairman Board of Governors, Federal Reserve System Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. Eccles: The St. Paul paper yesterday carried a front page story regarding your letter addressed to United States Senator Byrd of Virginia and quoted at some length from it. I was very much impressed with your answer to the Senator and was pleased that the St. Paul Pioneer Press and other papers gave it such publicity. If more people could read opinions such as yours about matters regarding which most people have a confused idea, it would be very helpful to them in arriving at a better understanding of our financial policies. There have been times in the past, and, no doubt, there will be in the future, when I have disagreed with some of your policies, but I am sure that on the fundamental,^important things, we can and do agree. Sincerely yours, Governor EAB/K January 5, 1939* My dear Governor: This is to thank you for your letter of December 27th with reference to my recent reply to Senator £yrd of Virginia. I am glad to know that the local press gave it so much attention, for my hope was that it might serve at least to develop discussion which is so essential to an understanding of the economic problems which confront us today. I wanted you to know that I appreciated your thoughtfulness and courtesy in writing. Sincerely yours, M. b. Eccles, Chairman. Honorable Elmer *. Benson, Saint Paul, Minnesota. ET:b
