April 11, 1951

Mr. Marriner S. Eccles
Board of Governors of the
Federal Reserve System
Washington, D. C.
Dear Governor Ecclesi
I am very much pleased that you have found it possible to ac
cept the invitation of the Secretary of the Texas Bankers Association
to address the bankers •mho attend the convention to be held in Dallas
on May li*-l5, 1951. An exceptionally interesting program has been ar
ranged and from 1200 to 1500 bankers are expected to attend the meetings.
A1 Williams has agreed to participate in the program, and I think Jim
Shelton will be here. Al's subject is "The Role of the Banker in the
Development of our Natural Resources", so his discussion will in no way
overlap or conflict with yours. I know that both of you will have un
usually interesting addresses to deliver.
I shall appreciate it if you will advise me when you expect
to arrive here, so I can arrange to meet you and can make a hotel reser
vation for you, unless the Secretary of the Texas Bankers Association
has already done so.
John Peyton phoned me this morning and advised that tentative
plans have been made for meetings of the committees of the Conference
of Presidents to commence immediately after lunch in Washington on May
15. If this program is definitely agreed upon, it will mean that A1
and I will have to leave Dallas by plane about U:30 Monday afternoon,
May lli. Unless you have made other plans, it would be nice if you could
make the trip back to Washington with us.
If it is entirely agreeable to you, I may invite a few of the
local and visiting bankers to have lunch with you, Al, and me here at
the bank on the lUth, unless that would conflict with some of the plans
which have been made by the Dallas Clearing House Association for the
entertainment of the visitors. I am very happy, indeed, that you are
planning to be here next month and am looking forward with pleasure to
seeing you at that time.

With best regards and all good wishes, I am,
Sincerely yours,

R. R. Gilbert
President

April 13, 1951.

Dear Randles
I appreciate your letter of April 11 relative to my
addressing the Texas Bankers Association at the convention on
May U - 1 5 •
For your information I am enclosing herewith a copy
of a letter I have just written to Mr. DeWitt Ray. You will
note that I have agreed to address the Bankers Association on
Monday afternoon and plan to leave Dallas on the 4s35 p.m.
American Airlines plane for Washington — I assume that is
the plane you and A1 will be traveling on and I am delighted
to accept your invitation to make the trip back here with you.
You will also note that I expect to arrive there on Sunday in
time for the general get-together — as you suggest, I will be
delighted to have you meet me and will also appreciate it if
you can arrange hotel reservations for me.
It is very thoughtful and considerate of you to sug
gest inviting a few of the local and visiting banks to have
lunch with you, A1 and me at the Bank on the 14-th. I think
that would be very pleasant and enjoyable. After you have
more information you can advise me whether or not such an ar
rangement would conflict with other plans.
I am glad to know that Al, too, is addressing the con
vention. I have a very high regard for him and know that he
will do a most excellent job — that means that I will have to
"look to my laurels"!
I am looking forward to seeing you both,
as well as many other friends.
With kindest personal regards,
Sincerely yours,

M. S. Eccles.
