My dear Chairman Eccles:
Ever since your most excellent address before The
Economic Club of Detroit Monday noon, February 20, the writer
has desired to convey to you in writing the very favorable
comments which he has received from others as well as his own
personal appreciation for your serving us on that occasion.
We again desire to congratulate you upon the very fine
impression which you made upon our members and guests, and we
shall welcome any further suggestions which you or your associates
may make available to us from time to time as to how we may do a
better job of promoting an interest in and enlightening the business
and professional men of Detroit on important national and inter
national, economic, social and governmental issues.
From a prominent Detroiter who stated, "Well, I could not
understand all he said but he certainly made me agree with him," to
those who not only understood what you stated but respected your
position even though they disagreed with you, all have agreed the
meeting was a great success and we are deeply indebted to you for
your frank and comprehensive answers to the questions which were
presented to you from the floor.
Enclosed herewith are some of the clippings which have
come to the writer's attention in which you may be interested.
None of the unfortunate references to the "off the record" character
of your address appeared in the Detroit papers which have been whole
hearted in their cooperation with The Economic Club of Detroit on this
as on every other occasion. The writer i3 fully in accord with the
position which you took in this matter, having in mind the importance
of getting your entire argument across rather than to run the risk
of having unwarranted conclusions and inferences drawn without the
supporting evidence.
The writer trusts that we may have the privilege of arrang
ing a similar luncheon in honor of your associate, Mr. Ernest G. Draper,
next year and possibly some of the members of your staff from time to time.

My dear Mr. Crow:
This is to thank you for your letter of
March 1, 1939, with regard to my recent talk before
your excellent organization.
Needless to say, I am very much pleased
to have your kind comments and felt that the audience
was interested, regardless of whether they entirely
agreed with my own viewpoint. It was all together
a most satisfactory occasion from my standpoint and
I am indebted to you for your many courtesies.
Let me thank you also for sending me the
clippings. The press of Detroit treated it so
fairly, in contrast to some others, that I am par
ticularly appreciative.
I/Kith kindest personal regards, I am
Very sincerely yours,
