SUPERVISOR

1938.

Hon. Marriner S. Socles, Chairman of the Board,
Federal Reserve System,
Washington, 33. C.
Dear Mr. Sccles:
On behalf of the Bankers Forum Committee, New York Chapter, it
gives me pleasure to express our sincere appreciation for the honor you
conferred on us by being our guest last Thursday evening.
The dinner
was the largest and most successful that we have had in the past ten years,
and we know that your presence had much to do with making it a memorable
occasion.
The Forum has for many years invited as guest speakers, men
prominent in banking and other fields, but we have never had. more favorable
comment than that resulting from your commendable address, for which we are
indeed grateful.
It is greatly regretted, however, that through unforeseen and
uncontrollable circumstances your introduction to our guests was considerably
delayed, and that because of the lateness of the hour you found it necessary
to somewhat curtail your address.
This is not only my feeling, but from
the expressions I have received, the composite opinion of the majority of
those who attended, and we of the Forum Committee hope that you will accept
our sincere apologies.
With renewed thanks to you for taking the time- and interest to
come to our dinner, and for the large part you played in the success of the
evening, I am,

Sincerely yours»

Chairman,
Bankers Forum Committee.

Mr. itoland C. Sherrer, Chairman,
Bankers Forum Committee,
New York Chapter,
■American Institute of Banking,
¿33 Broadway,
New York City.
Dear Mr. Sherrer:
Your letter of December 3d on behalf of the
Bankers Forum Committee, New York Chapter, is very much
appreciated. It was a privilege to be with you on this
occasion' and to know that the dinner was the largest and
most successful of the past ten years.
You may be sure that I fully understand the un
foreseen and uncontrollable circumstances which delayed
my own part in the program somewhat beyond the scheduled
time, but you and your associates on the committee need have
no concern on my behalf because it gave me a reason for
laying aside a manuscript, which I disliked to read in any
case, and to speak extemporaneously, while the many as
pects of current problems, as I see them, cannot be dealt
with adequately within the limitations of a speech, my only
regrets were the ones I always have that within a given
time I failed to make various points as effectively as I
would like to do.
Your letter is reassuring, and I wish to thank
you and through you your associates for all your kindness
and consideration.
Sincerely yours,

U. S. Eccles,
Chairman.
