November 25th, 1935.

Mr. Marriner C. Ecoles,
Chairman, Federal Reserve Board,
Washington, D.C.
My Dear Mr. Eccles:I want to thank you for yours
of the 21st enclosing copy of your address before
thé American Bankers Association Convention in New
Orleans on Nov.14th.
I want to take this home
and give it considerable study, for while it
been many years since my banking experience,
tried to keep in pretty close touch with the
situation of the world, and get a great deal
out of it.

financial
of pleasure

I have been carrying on some little
correspondence with Mr. J . M . Nichols, President of the
First National Bank of Englewood, Chicago, and the
Chicago American ana Chicago Tribune have carried on
their financial pages some references to this corres
pondence.
In my opinion had we had someone
as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of your
views and caliber in 1928 and 1929, the world would
have been saved the depression, which is acknowledged
to be one of the largest and most severe in the history
of the financial world.
It might interest you to know that
for the past two months the companies with which I am
associated have had the best lumber business in their
history, and I am crediting this to the good work being
done by the present Administration, including the
Federal Reserve Board of which you are head*

My dear Marriner:
I very much appreciate your sending me the stenographic transcript
of your talk before the Bankers Association meeting. I have read
it with very great interest. I have two main impressions about its
First, that it is a very strong statement about most important mat
ters; and, second, that there is in it all the way through the frank
sort of man-to-man attitude which is much to be desired and admired.
If there were more of such straightforward, friendly frankness in
the analysis of conditions and exposition of purposes and accomplish
ment, we would, I think, have much less of suspicion and misunderstand
ing and fear than exists at the present time.
I was particularly regretful of the situation that brought about what
looked like a slap at you in the election of one of the officers.
It’s too bad that the work of an intelligent and industrious public
official, and the activities of a great association, should be com
plicated ty the personal venom of one man.
Assuring you again that I greatly appreciate your sending me the
copy, I am
