L EW ISTO N BRANCH L E W ISTO N , IDAH O March 12, 1951 Mr. Marriner S. Eccles c/o Board of Governors Federal Reserve Board Washington 25, D. C. Dear Marrinert According to the program of the Northwest Banking Conference, to be held at Washington State College, Pullman, Washington, on April 5 and 6, 1951» you are to appear on the program on the afternoon of Thursday, April 5th. I am glad to note that you have finally been decoyed in close enough so that you will make your first visit to Lewiston j remember, Lewiston is only 28 miles from Pullman so you must surely arrange to pay us a call on this trip. The Lewiston Chamber of Commerce has heard that you are going to be on the Pullman program and they are setting aside a luncheon date for you on Friday, April 6th. I should like very much, in deed, to bring you home with me Thursday evening, show you around this territory Friday forenoon and have you speak to the Chamber of Commerce membership at their regular monthly membership meet ing on Friday noon, April 6th. The fact that you might take the time to speak to than for 30 or U5 minutes, on any subject of your own choise, will more than please our citizens. You may well ask, "What do they want me to talk about?" Again, I say, they are perfectly willing to leave it to you. The questions the people of this community ask me most frequently arej When will I, as a merchant, be selling merchandise on ?. declining market?, Will there be a recession when controls really take hold?, Can we avoid a shooting war with Russia? Those are some of the thoughts in the minds of the people of this community. I hope you can arrange your travel schedule so as to stay in this area long enough to come to Lewiston on Friday, April 6th. I Marriner S. Eccles - Page 2 March 12, 1951 vill be glad to drive you in any direction to catch a plane after you have completed your Pullman engagement. I can easily drive you to Spokane or to Walla Walla where connections can be made with the Northwest Airlines (Spokane) and the United Airlines (Walla Waila). Both of these towns are approximately 100 miles from Lewiston and the roads are in good condition. With my very best personal regai HMEs ml cc: J. L. Driscoll Boise Branch March 15, 1951. Dear Harry: I greatly appreciate your thoughtful letter of March 12, relative to stopping at Lewiston during my trip to Pullman, where I am to address the Pacific Northwest Conference on Banking on the afternoon of April 5. As I explained to you on the telephone last night, it will not be possible for me to return to Lewiston to address the Chamber of Commerce on April 6. I have a speaking engagement in Los Angeles on April 7 (Group 5 of the California Bankers Association) and have a plane reservation out of Spokane on April 6 at 6:00 a.m.. As I suggested, I am arranging my plane reservations so as to arrive at the Lewiston-Clarkston airport on April U at 3*25 p.m. and I will be glad to address! your Chamber of Commerce that evening if desired, but in any case I will drive with you to Pullman either that evening or on the morning of April 5« It will be necessary for me to have someone drive me to Spokane on April 5 after I have finished my address at Pullman. If it is convenient’for you, as you suggested, I will be pleased to have you drive me. I am leaving for Utah the end of this week and it would be helpful to pe if you would advise me at Ogden, in care of the Hotel ben Lomond, whether or not you find April A an agreeable date for me to address your Chamber of Commerce. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours, M. S. ticcles. Mr. H. M. Emerson, Sr. Vice President, First Security Bank of Idaho, Lewiston, Idaho.
