VICE PRESIDENT

March 15th
1938

Mr. Marriner S. Eccles, Chairman
Federal Reserve Board
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Eccles,The annual convention of the Hew ^ersey Bankers* Association
will be held at Atlantic City, New Jersey this year on May 12th,
13th, and 14th. We would deem it a special privilege if we had
you as one of our speakers.
This year, in particular, our committee feels that to have you
as one of our principal speakers would be a great benefit not only
to the bankers of New ¿ersey, but also to the bankers throughout
the country. I do not think we have ever had the pleasure of enter
taining you at any sizeable banking function in this state.
There are two principal sessions at the conference, both on Fri
day, May 13th; the first in the morning, and the second in the
afternoon. We could arrange for you to address the convention
at either of these sessions, and your subject would, of course,
be entirely of your own choosing. Your audience would be made
up of between six and seven hundred New Jersey bankers.
It is our sincere hope that your plans will permit you to be our
guest of this important occasion. Although your speaking engage
ment would necessitate your being at the convention only one day,
we would be delighted to have you with us the full three days.
Will you please make every effort to accept.
Sincerely yours

Chairman - Speakers* Comm.
Annual Convention
N. J. Bankers* Association

Mr. Miter £. French, Vice President,
The Trust Company of New Jersey,
35 Journal Square,
Jersey City, New Jersey.
My dear Mr. French:
Chairman Eccles, who is temporarily out of
the city, asked me to acknowledge receipt of your
letter of March 15th and to thank you for your in
vitation to be one of the speakers at the annual
convention of the New Jersey cankers i*ssociation
at Atlantic '■'ity on May lith.
because of the pressure of affairs here,
the Chairman has been obliged to forego making
speaking engagements that would take him out of
Washington during the next few months. According
ly, he asked me to tell you that much as he would
enjoy the opportunity to be with you on this occa
sion, he feels reluctantly compelled to decline.
He asked me particularly to express to you his
appreciation of your courtesy.
Very truly yours,

Elliott Ahurston,
Special Assistant
to the Chairman.

iiy dear Chairman:
We take this opportunity to extend to you a
hearty vote of thanks on behalf of the officers, committee
men and the more than 1000 delegates for your contribution
to our program at the Convention of the New Jersey Bankers
Association at the Ambassador Hotel, last week.
All expressions of the delegates were highly
complimentary concerning your views on "The Current Business
And Economic Outlook".
Your presence made our Convention an outstanding
success, and we are deeply grateful for the sacrifice of
time and effort that you were subjected to.
We trust you enjoyed other features of the program,
and will be glad to have you visit us on future occasions.
If you will kindly advise us, we will gladly
assume any incidental expenses of your trip from Washington.

May ¿3, 1938.

My dear Mr. Coate:
Your letter of May 19th with its most
gratifying references to my part on your program
is especially appreciated because I felt that I
had put you and your associates to considerable
inconvenience after having first concluded that
it would be impossible for me to accept the invita
tion to attend the Convention, and then having de
cided that it would afford me a very timely oppor
tunity to say some things which 1 felt needed saying
at this juncture, even though i knew a good deal of
it would not be palatable.
The arrangements you made for me and the
courtesies which you extended left nothing to be
desired. I would appreciate it if you would extend
my thanks as well to the other officers of the New
Jersey Bankers Association.
Sincerely yours,

M. S. Eccles,
Chairman.
Mr. a . H. Coate, Secretary,
New Jersey Bankers Association,
Moorestown, New Jersey.
