December 13, 1934,
Hon. Marriner S. Eccles,
Governor, Federal Reserve Board,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Governor Eccles:
Mr. Albert M. Creighton has told me of your will
ingness to address the Boston Chamber of Commerce during
your expected visit to Boston on February 16. This is most
gracious of you and deeply appreciated.
But may I be permitted a word of explanation
about our Boston situation? We have in our Metropolitan
Area many worth while business organizations; but there
are two, the Beacon Society of Boston and the Commercial
Club of Boston, which stand out preeminently on account
of their long history and the calibre of their memberships.
Every few years these organizations hold a joint meeting
and on Saturday, February 16, one of these rare occasions
will be held; and you are to be the guest-speaker.
Now the Boston Chamber of Commerce desires you
as its guest-speaker; and I understand that you are willing
to speak before the Chamber on Friday, February 15---the
day before the joint meeting of these two clubs.
I had the pleasure last year of being the President
of the Commercial Club, and have been to many dinners of the
Beacon Society. I am afraid, if the Chamber accepts your kind
offer, that your appearance here will hurt the joint meeting
the following evening, because most of their members also are
members of the Chamber. I am sure you will understand that
the Chamber does not want to be in the position of interfering
with the meeting of another organization, particularly where
the memberships so generally overlap. On the other hand your
speaking before a Chamber Luncheon will give you a much broader

contact with the business executives of New England and wider
publicity through the radio and newspapers.
Under these circumstances, February 15th would not
seem to be a favorable time for you to come to the Chamber.
It is a great regret to come to this conclusion, but no doubt
you will appreciate this frank statement of the situation.
Please do not dismiss from your mind, however, the
possibility of coming here at a later date. We want to have
you very much, and will count upon it. It is perhaps too
early now to talk of a définite date, but please leave the
door open so that we may take the matter up again at an op
portune time.
Sincerely yours,

E W jESG

Eliot Wadsworth,
President

December 18, 1934»

Mr. Eliot Wadsworth, President,
Boston Chamber of Commerce,
Boston, Massachusetts.
My dear Mr. Wadsworth:
I assure you that I fully appreciate the situa
tion regarding my appearance in Boston on February 16th,
as explained in your letter of December 13th, and I am
sure that your conclusions are correct.
At the time Mr. Creighton was in my office I
advised him that I would be glad to accept his invitation
if it could.be arranged so that the February 16th evening
appointment could be changed to February 15th, all other
considerations being acceptable to those interested. The
reason I desired this change was because I feel I will not
be able to spend more than one day in Boston.
At the time, of course, it was not explained to
me that the same people might be in attendance at the taro
meetings, and after your explanation, I fully agree with
you that it would not be advisable for me to appear before
both groups.
Sincerely yours,

M. S. Eccles,
Governor.
