Dear Mr. Sccles: The Social Science Section of the Ohio College Association will have its annual meetings in Columbus, Ohio, Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15. As president of the section, I extend an invitation to you to speak to this group either at a dinner meeting Friday evening or luncheon Saturday noon. As a professor of economics, I have "been in agreement with your security reserve proposal and recent testimony before Congress. A discussion of the proper role of the Federal Reserve System and Treasury in our control system would he most welcome to us in Ohio, hut any subject you would wish to discuss would he satisfactory. Thank you for considering this engagement. Very truly yours, %(Lo. OU. George W. Thatcher Associate Professor nt Economics GffT/at January 23, 1950. Frof. George to. Thatcher, Department of Economics, School of business administration, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Dear Professor Thatcher: Your very kind letter of January 11 inviting me to speak before the Social Science Section of the Ohio College Association is very much, appreciated. It would have had a prompter, acknowledg ment but for the fact that I have been trying to foresee what my schedule would be in the middle of April. So far as I can now tell I hope that I shall be able to make the trip to Columbus and I should prefer to speak; at the dinner meeting on Friday evening, April 1A, if that is agreeable to you. Let me say, incidentially, that I have always made it a rule not to accept any remuneration for speaking or writing in connects on with my public duties and therefore your lack of funds for this purpose is entirely immater ial in ray case.. Because of the importance of your group in the educational world I welcome an opportunity to express some of my own views on the general subject which you suggest, recognizing that monetary and credit policy is, of course, only one element in the larger problem of stabilizing economic progress. Unless something unforeseen develops I shall undertake to be with you for the Friday evening meeting. If that turns out to be impossible because of duties here I shall advise you as promptly as possible. Sincerely yours, M. S. Eccles.
