Mr. Marriner S. Eccles, Chairman
Board of Governors
Federal Reserve System
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Eccles:
Our members, especially our Board of Governors,
have repeatedly expressed their appreciation of your address
last Wednesday night. We well realize that to take the time
out of your busy and useful life to make a talk is a real sacri
fice and we are sincerely grateful to you for your courtesy as
well as to Mr. Szymezak for his intervention.
I do believe, however, that talking face to face
with these officials of the moderately sized banks with their
numerous contacts, is very important, especially here in the
Mid-West. Perhaps for that reason we can justify ourselves in
so persistently urging you to be our guest in spite of your many
responsibilities.
As I promised, I am sending Mr. Clayton a copy
of the transcript of your speech which has just been delivered
to us.
It was a real pleasure as well as an honor to
have you with us.
Cordially yours,

SEDsS

October k&, 1941.

Dear Miss Downing:

This is to acknowledge and thank you for
your thoughtful letter of October 21 in which you ex
pressed the appreciation of your Board of Governors and
the members of the Chicago District Illinois Bankers asso
ciation for my recent address before them, while it is no
pleasure for me to deliver a talk of that kind, particular
ly in these serious times, I enjoyed meeting the members of
your Association and I appreciated the fine attention I
was accorded during my address.
May I add that I appreciated very much
your invitation to join you and a small group of your mem
bers following the dinner for a more informal visit. This
would have been very pleasant except that I was quite
tired from a rather heavy three-day schedule just ended.
You will recall that I asked for a rain check at the time,
and I trust that on some future occasion, I can avail my
self of this deferred pleasure.
Mr. Clayton has advised me of the receipt
of the transcript of my talk for which also accept my
thanks/
Yours sincerely,

M. 3. Eccles,
Chairman.

Miss Sue £. Downing,
Executive Secretary,
Chicago District
Illinois Bankers A s s o c i a t i o n
Chic&go, Illinois.
