GENERAL OFFICE January 13th 1936 Governor M. S. Secies Shoreham Hotel Washington, D. C. My dear Marriner: As I advised you recently, both Senators McNary and Steiwer got away before Mr. Smith could sse them, but I have just received letter today advising that he has written them and will forward their replies as soon as received. I know that Senator Gary will be all right. With respect to Senator Borah, there are some things that I am doing for him at this particular time and by reason of which, he will certainly do nothing to stir things up. I doubt very much whether in any event he would oppose confirmation, and under the circumstances, I feel so sure about it that I have thought it beat not to raise any question with him and thus show anxiety. Not having heard from filson McCarthy I just phoned him and he says that he has already written Senator Adams direct, and I requested him to send you a copy at the Shoreham. He is a auest tonight at the home of Gerald Hughes and as this has been an invitation standing for some few days, he figured that it would be the best time to talk to him and he will advise further tomorrow. Incidentally, he has accepted a directorship in the First National Bank at Denver and it is in connection with that he is at Hughes home tonight. Senator Thomas is in southern California. He would prefer not to come to Washington unless it is definitely necessary but he will do whatever is required to be done. No doubt you will have a line on this situation within a few days and then we can make our plans in accordance with that. Of course whenever it is desirable, we will get in tauch directly with Senators Cary and Borah, but from wLat you said the other night, I thought it may ?;ork around in such shape that there will be no need of doing anything. With best wishes.
