WILSON MCCARTHY PRESIDENT January 17, 1936 Mr. Harriner S. Eccles, Chairman, Federal Reserve Board, Washington, D. C. Dear Marriner: I received your letter the other day telling me you were sending a book, which has not yet arrived, but I am sure I will appreciate reading it. Sometime ago I wrote a letter to Senator Alva B. Adams, copy of which I am enclosing. I am just in receipt of a reply from him, which I am also sending to you. I rather like the tenor of Senator Adam's letter, but do not know just how he will vote. I also spoke to our banker friends here in Denver relative to interceding with Senator Adams on your behalf. He has a brother, Clarence Adams, who is an officer of the International Trust Company, and who is about the only banker in town who did not attend your party when you were here | he would have been there had he not had a previous engagement. I expect to hear something directly from him in the next few days as to how Senator Adams actually feels in connection with this matter. I am sure your friends here will do everything in their power to be of assistance to you. If there is anything further which I can do for you at any time, I wish you would kindly advise me. With personal regards and best wishes for your continued success, Sincerely, WILSON MCCARTHY PRESIDENT January 10, 1956 Ion* Alva Adams, Senate Building, Washington, D. C, my dear Senator: I regret exceedingly that I have not had th@ privilege of meetiag and becoming better e,cquainted with you, although m have many mutual frieads here in Colorado* I do feel, however, X ast well enough acquainted with Y O U to write this letter, and to give to you my cm. personal opinion regarding the matter I as interested in* I an anxious to see Marriner S* Eecles confirmed as a of the Federal Reserve Board. I have known Mr. Eecles intimately for about thir^ years and have had more or less contact with his during that time* As a young van Mr, Eecles was always regarded, and is at the present time, as a very conservative, capable business man, who had little to do with politics and who was concerned prisarily with the development of very large interests, particularly banking, sugar factories, dairying, livestock, irrigation projects, large construction enterprises and other natters of this kind, which have meant so ouch in the growth of -Use West. Few young men of his age have done more in the economic development of the iiitersountain region than hat* Mr. Secies. I appreciate, by reason of many statements which he has made during this period, that he has boesa the target of pleni^r of opposition. My own personal opinion of Hr* Eecles, however, is that he is fundasentally sound and perfectly sincere in his statements and in his beliefs. You and I might not agree with a n that he has done or said, yet his very background, training and interests are certainly sufficient assurance that Kr» Eceles will give to the affairs of the Government the same degree of conscientious effort and ability which he has demonstrated in his o«a private affairs. I sincerely trust ay opinion might be of sose assistance in at least helping you to form a proper estimate of Hr. Eecleu, and also hope that you will see your way clear to vote for his confirmation* Assuring you of ay high esteem for you personally and wishing you continued success, 1 remain lours very sincerely, WILSON MCCARTHY ALVA B. Denver, Colorado My dear Mr. McCarthy: I have your letter in reference to the confirmation of Mr. Eccles. I am very glad to have your views in reference to him as I know of your long acquaintance with him and opportunity to know of his qualifications and capacity. I do not know what, if any, opposition may be made to his confirmation although there are rumors of opposition. When the matter comes before the Senate Banking and Currency Committee, I will give your letter consideration and will probably take occasion to pass on your views to other members of that Committee.
