THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON

May 3, 1943.

Mr. Marriner S. Secies,
Chairman, Board of Governors of the
Federal Reserve System,
Federal Reserve Building,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Eccles:
Would it be possible for you to make
the Board of Governors Room, the small conference
room adjacent, and four nearby office rooms in
the Federal Reserve Building available for a
period of two weeks starting Saturday, May 8th?
The purpose for which these rooms is
desired is so secret that I cannot mention it
as yet. However, I assure you it has a most
important bearing on the war effort.
I would appreciate hearing from you at
your earliest convenience and I will then designate an officer to consult with you or someone
whom you designate in order to make the necessary
detailed arrangements.

Thanking you for your courtesy, I an.
Sincerely yours,

CHAIRMAN'S OFFICE

I

May U,
My dear Mr. President:
In accordance with the request in your letter of
May 3» I have arranged to postpone until May Si* and subsequent dates the series of meetings which were scheduled
to take place during the two weeks' period beginning May 8
so that the Board Room, the adjacent Conference Room and
four offioe rooms in the Federal Reserve Building may be
made available for the purpose you have in mind during this
time*
Hhile regular meetings of the Board can be held
elsewhere in the interim and the scheduled statutory meeting with the Federal Advisory Council, which had been set
for May 17, can be deferred temporarily, I feel that I
should emphasise that it is imperative not to postpone beyond Monday, May 2^., the meeting of the Federal Open Market
Committee and the meetings of the Board with the presidents
of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks which we had expected
to hold during this period, since these meetings are of
primary importance in determining policies covering System
operations essential for the financing of the war. It is
necessary to call these meetings sufficiently in advance to
make possible arrangements for transportation and other accommodations. Accordingly, I am proceeding on the basis of
your letter, with the understanding that the space desired
will be vacated and available for our use not later than
May 2l|.
I will be glad if you will direct the officer whom
you designate to communicate with me in order that the necessary detailed arrangements may bo made.
Respectfully yours,

M. S. Socles,
Chairman.
The Honorable
The President of the United States,
The Ihite House.
