W. RANDOLPH BURGESS
55

WALL STREET
NEW

YORK

February 2, 194-0.

Dear Marriner:
As you assume a new tour of duty in one of the
positions of greatest responsibility in our government, I
want to give you my best wishes for a successful and distinctive administration*

Even with all the handicaps which

we both know so well, no service is more vital for the public
welfare* While you and I have from time to time differed
in point of view I have always felt the greatest respect for
your integrity, your devotion to the public service, and
your courage in speaking out at meeting* Over a period of
years it is my hope that we shall be working for common
objectives, and I trust that you will feel free to call on
me for any help I can render.
With the best of good wishes,
Sincerely yours,

Honorable Marriner S. Eccles,
Chairman, Board of Governors of the
Federal Reserve System,
Washington, D. C*

Dear Kandolph:
Your note of February k with regard to
my renomination is particularly appreciated because
of the close association that I enjoyed having with
you while you were still devoting your talents to
the System and that I hope always to have whenever
occasion permits. **e may not always see eye to eye
in our analysis of banking and monetary problems,
but we certainly have the same objectives.
Whether confirmation will be forthcoming
remains to be seen, but, in any case, it is gratifying to have the generous comment of one's friends.
heedless to add, 1 never feel the slightest
hesitation about calling upon you, and 1 wish to
reciprocate most heartily your good wishes.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. ft. Randolph burgess,
55 wall Street,
New York City.
