CHARLES SUMNER HAMLIM
(1861 - 1938)

The papers of Charles Hamlin, lawyer, Assistant Secretary
of the Treasury for two terms, first Governor of the Federal Reserve
Board, member 1914-36, specie.1 counsel 1936-38, were given to the
Library of Congress between 1936 and 1955• The first group came from
Charles S. Hamlin, and subsequent groups from Mrs. Hamlin. The
diaries were deposited early, withdrawn, end returned by Mr. Hamlin1 s
widow on December 29, 1941 with a ten year seal on the diaries. The
limiting clause read "Subject to the following limitations and trust, that access
to the diaries for a period of ten years or until my death prior to
the end of such period, shall not be permitted to anyone except with
my consent in writing."

The period of limitation having ended December 29, 1951, the
diaries are now open to students under Library of Congress restrictions,
The Library of Congress controls all rights of publication
in the diary of Charles S. Hamlin. Requests for publication therefrom
should be submitted to the Chief of the Manuscripts Division. Such
literary rights as Mrs. Hamlin possesses have been dedicated to the
public.
The diaries, correspondence and the Charles S. Hamlin scrapbooks concern current social, economic and political affairs, end are
especially valuable in connection with the formation and history of the
Federal Reserve System.
The diaries of Mr. Hamlin1s widow are deposited in the
Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park but contain little besides personal
and social notes.

The total Hamlin deposit consists of 34-5 volumes and 2
manuscript boxes of loose material. This collection includes:
28 bound volumes of diaries covering the period 1887-1935
25 bound volumes of digest and index of the diaries
— volumes of scrapbooks filled by Mr. Hamlin with newspaper
clippings covering the period 1871-1938
23 bound index volumes of those clippings
Extracts covering Federal Reserve material were typed from
volumes 1 to 15 of the diaries. The Federal Reserve Board has a copy
of these excerpts, and this copy was loaned to this Committee where
is is kept with reference material. Another copy is in the hands of
Mrs. Hamlin.
A list of the diary volumes, with dates covered and extracts
typed, is appended.
