The papers of Hiram W. Johnson, ls/wyer, U. £• Senator
from 1917 to 194-59 £ founder of the Progressive Party and its
nominee for Vice President of the U. S. in 1912, were purchased
by the University of California in January, 1956. They are at
the Bancroft Library of the University, Berkeley 4, California.

The collection is still in boxes. It is therefore
restricted until such time as it can be properly organized and
arranged for use.

Educated at University of California, leaving in
junior year; also studied lav in his father1s
office

Admitted to California bar end practiced in
Sacramento

Removed to San Francisco

Member, staff of prosecuting attorneys in boodling
cases involving leading city officials and almost
all public utility corporations in San Francisco

1908

Selected to replace Francis J. Heney, after latter
was shot down in court wnile prosecuting Abe
Ruef for bribery and secured conviction of Ruef

Governor of California >

A founder of the Progressive Party and nominee for
Vice President of the U, S. en its ticket
