PAPERS OF FRANK A. VANDERLIP
President National City Bank 1909 - 1919
Vice Pres. "
"
" 1901 - 1909
Asst. Secretary of Treasury 1897 - 1901
TO: Miss Adams

Dec. 17, 19$h

FROM: M. Burnett
In the search for the papers of Frank A. Vanderlip I was referred by
the librarian of the National City Bank to Mr. Hevener of the Bank's Public
Relations Department. He reported after investigation that there were no
papers of Mr. Vgnderlip at the National City Bank. He suggested we call his
son, Frank A. Vanderlip, Jr., at $2 Wall St. (PI U- 36Lth).
Mr. Vanderlip said that there were papers in existence and he thought
there would be no trouble about granting access to them for scholarly research
purposes. His mother would have to give permission. She has already allowed
a student from Chicago to c onsult them in connection with his thesis on Yerkes,
a Chicago traction magnate. Mrs. Vanderlip!s address is kO$ Lexington Ave., N.Y.C.
(MU 6- 6333).

(According to Mr. Hevener, she is elderly but still active in

charitable causes and I presume this is a business office address.)
However, Mr. Vanderlip said his sister was more familiar with the
papers since she was his secretary for a number of years. She just arrived
back from Europe on December l£, and he had not yet succeeded in reaching her
by phone. The number is: Briarclifff 6- 2278 . Her home address is:
Mrs. Dudley N. Schoales,
Scarborough, New York.

(Virginia Vanderlip)

Perhaps a letter from you would be the best approach.
Mr. Vanderlip, Sr., wrote an autobiography, with Boyden Sparks, in 1935,
entitled "From Farm Boy to Financier." Mr. Vanderbilt, Jr. said that his father
once commented that the title should have added to it "and back again." I suppose
he referred to his estate in Scarborough. flXo© M A t ^ J ^ ^ w O J U ^ I ^ ^ A

Mr. Vanderlip said his father had written other books and also an introduction referring to the Federal Reserve System. He said he would have a list of
the titles made and send it to me. I have made a card for the Biography file under

"Bankers".
