Believe me though, we have been working steadily on the problem and I have come, up with rather sketchy findings. October 19 f 1955 Mr. Flinkers* As liaison officer appointed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland to deal with this Committee, you probably know that one of our most difficult problems has been that of preparing a list of specific records "which, chosen from the mass of material handled in the Reserve Bank, can be labelled as having historical value end therefore being worthy of long retention. After a series of visits made to the twelve regional banks and of consultations kindly made possible during those visits, ve realize that some of the valuable early materiel has already been discarded in sos© of the Federal Reserve Banks and is lost to us* The best we can hope is that -what is still left will be retained, whether it is in general •uncurrent* files, or in departmental files, or in the private files of older officers. In the above connection, the Subcommittee on Destruction of Records whicht 1 understand, functions under the Committee on Miscellaneous Operations of the Conference of Presidents, was given the assignment of conferring with the staff of this Committee with a view of developing guides and standards for the preservation of historical material by the Federal Reserve Banks* As you know, Mr* P* Breidenbach represents tfo© Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland on that Subcommittee* At the meeting of the Subcommittee held in New Xork on October 5-7* 1955§ I conferred with, the members of the Subcommittee Bnd we then developed jointly the ettached list of records and other papers which is suggestive of the types of material oir Committee is seeking to preserve for historical purposes* While the Subcommittee has informed me that the material here referred t© will form a part of its next report to the Committee on Miscellaneous Operations, 1 am hopeful that, in the meantime, such material will prove helpful to you in deciding upon the propriety of the disposal of particular records* Very truly yours* Mildred Adams Mr* Harmen B. Our main focus now is on locating and listing materials at the Board9 in the individual Reserve 3&aks, as well as collections of private papers repoeing in university libraries to see how auch useful material we can turn up as a Dasis for later historical studies* Mi33 Adams had been hoping to visit Cleveland and ouier deserve Banks in the West during this exploratory period but finds she has to postpone longer trips until & later date. She is of course such interested in the ring binders you mention, and we are wondering whether you might not nave available for our use a subject index of their contents andAr a chronology of the main events in the iiistory of your Basic. It would be helpful if we could call upon your research staff or library for a bibliogr&pay of source aaterials relating to the establishment and operations of the Cleveland Bank, and possibly also of important published studies or notable (unpublished) memoranda prepared by your economics staff. We have a real interest also in public speeches given by top Federal Reserve officials and economists and would be glad to know whether your library has a ciaralative index of iaportent addresses of persons now or formerly connected with the Cleveland Bank, This se«ss like a formidable request, but I hope you will not try to go beyond providing us with whatever descriptive materials you already have on hand relevant to Reserve System history in general and that of the Clevelaad Bank in particular which could be passed on to us for inventory purposes. Unfortunately, I find nothing which would fit the description of "private papers" as all the material was in the form of lectures and notes for his teaching at the University of Pittsburgh where he was a professor. There is nothing in the way of original research or opinions and because of the subjects he taught, most of his notes are statistical or tabular in form. The collection includes nothing in the way of correspondence, I know of no other papers deposited elsewhere and cannot say if his family might possess correspondence of interest. We are so very much interested in your present project and if we may be of help please call on us. Very truly yours, V. Mrs. Phyllis L. Also, is it organized so that it could be consulted by students? Our chief concern, of course is in references to th© Federal Reserve System. As you know, we are trying to locate a 11 private papers of officials of the Federal Reserve Systeia.
