There has been a great increase in investment holdings of commercial banks as compared with loans and
discounts. This makes it necessary for the present-day
banker to study the investment market and to keep posted
on international affairs in order to antiiipate the
world demand for capital. Abstract by N.H. Whitney,

Commercial banking during the depression.
(In: Journal of the American statistical Assn.,
March, 1933, pp.59-74)
The idea of relegating profit-making to a see
ondairy position is not new in banking. This principle is embodied in the F.H.System, and can easily
be extended to member banks by regulations to
bring about a greater control and stabilization of
business, with profits secondary.
