Quantitative Analysis in Economic
Theory," (Presidential Address at 37th Annual Meeting
of the American Economic Association, Chicago,
December 29, 1924), AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, XV, No.
1, March, 1925, pp. 1-12.

The increase of statistical data, the improvement of
statistical technique, and the endowment of social
research are enabling a larger use of quantitative
analysis. Because of the difference between the conception of nature borrowed by qualitative theoiy from Newtonian mechanics and the statistical conception of nature
quantitative theorists usually find it necessary to
forwnlate problems in a way different from that adopted
by qualitative theorists, making the treatment of behavio
more objective, fsnpharrl zing the importance of institutions, and promoting the development of an experimental
technique. Abstract by M. A. Copeland, AMERICAN
ECONOMIC REVIEW, XV, June 1925, p.
