THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓

New orders for durable goods fell $5.4 billion in August, or by
3.1 percent, the largest decline in 16 months. Actual shipments
of durable goods, on the other hand, rose 0.3 percent in August,
following a 0.5 percent increase in July.

✓

Sales of existing single-family homes were at an annual rate of
4.13 million units in August, down 0.5 percent from their July sales
pace. Measured on a year-to-date basis, however, existing home
sales are up 11.3 percent from the same period last year.
According to the Conference Board, its consumer confidence index
measured 111.8 percent (1985=100) in September, off 0.2 percentage
points from August. In the third quarter, consumer confidence
reached its highest level since the fourth quarter of 1989.

✓

The index of U.S. import prices fell 0.2 percent in August, the
fourth consecutive drop, as petroleum and nonpetroleum import
prices both declined. Import prices have fallen 0.5 percent
measured from a year earlier.

✓

The yield on long-term Treasury securities averaged 6.96 percent
for the week ending Sept. 27, up 99 basis points from the week ending
Dec. 29, 1995, and up 34 basis points from 52 weeks earlier
(see page 7).
