July 11, 2002 USFinancialData THE WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS: ■ Sales by merchant wholesalers of durable and nondurable goods were $227.8 billion in May, down 0.2 percent from the previous month’s (revised) figure but up 0.2 percent from May 2001. Wholesale inventories were $281.4 billion in May, up 0.1 percent from the previous month but down 7.2 percent from a year earlier. The May inventory-to-sales ratio edged up to 1.24 from 1.23 in April but remained well below its level of 1.33 a year earlier. ■ The producer price index for finished goods rose 0.1 percent in June, following declines of 0.4 percent in May and 0.2 percent in April. Excluding food and energy components, the core producer price index rose 0.2 percent in June. ■ Prices of U.S. imports declined 0.6 percent in June, the first monthly decline in 2002. Petroleum import prices were down 6.6 percent for the month, while non-petroleum prices rose by 0.1 percent. From June 2001 to June 2002, prices for all imports have fallen by 3.9 percent, with petroleum import prices down 7.9 percent and nonpetroleum prices down 2.6 percent. ■ In the week ending July 6, initial claims for unemployment insurance were 403,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week’s revised figure. The four-week moving average of initial claims was 395,000, down from 403,500 four weeks earlier. All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
