THE WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS:
■ In January, the producer price index (PPI) for finished goods rose
1.6 percent, as food prices rose 1.6 percent and energy prices surged
4.8 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, the PPI increased
0.9 percent, the largest increase since December 1998. Measured
from a year earlier, the total PPI is up 2.8 percent, while the core
measure is up 0.5 percent.
■ The U.S. goods and services trade deficit totaled $44.2 billion in
December, $4.2 billion more than November’s deficit (in absolute
terms). For the year, the U.S. trade deficit measured $435.2 billion,
or 4.2 percent of GDP. In 2001, the trade deficit measured $358.3
billion, or 3.6 percent of GDP.
■ According to the Conference Board, the index of leading indicators
in January was unchanged from its December 2002 level. In January,
the component with the largest positive contribution was average
weekly claims for state unemployment insurance benefits. The
component with the largest negative contribution to the index was
the University of Michigan’s index of consumer expectations.
■ Initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits totaled
402,000 for the week ending Feb. 15. The four-week moving average
totaled 394,750, its highest since the week ending Jan. 4.
■ In January, new housing starts rose 0.2 percent to an annual rate
of 1,850,000 units. By contrast, after rising 8.6 percent in December,
housing permits fell 5.6 percent in January. Measured from a year
earlier, housing starts have risen 8 percent, while permits have
risen 5.6 percent.
