Texas Service Sector Outlook Survey

2011-2025

The Texas Service Sector Outlook Survey is a monthly assessment of service sector business conditions in Texas, providing timely economic data for a sector that accounts for 73% of Texas private-sector activity and employs over 12 million workers. Launched in January 2007 and publicly released since June 2011, the survey collects responses from approximately 230 service-providing firms about changes in key business indicators including revenue, employment, prices, and company outlook. Survey methodology involves electronically distributed questionnaires with data collection over seven business days. Results are calculated as diffusion indexes by subtracting the percentage of respondents reporting decreases from those reporting increases, with positive values indicating expansion and negative values indicating contraction. The TSSOS addresses a significant regional data gap and demonstrates high correlation with other regional economic indicators such as private service sector employment. Complete monthly results are published on the Dallas Fed website, along with collection dates and response rates.
