Tech Pulse Index

2003-2020

The Tech Pulse Index is an index of coincident indicators of activity in the U.S. information technology sector. It can be interpreted as a summary statistic that tracks the health of the tech sector in a timely manner. The indicators used to compute the index are investment in IT goods, consumption of personal computers and software, employment in the IT sector, as well as industrial production of and shipments by the technology sector. The index extracts the common trend that drives these series.

This index, first constructed in 2003, aggregates information on production of and investment in IT capital, employment in the information sector, and several other time series. However, due to the shift to services in the IT sector, like cloud computing and the delivery of product on non-PC platforms, the indicators became much less representative of economic activity in the sector and the series was discontinued in 2020. The latest data (updated April 13, 2020) has been converted to a FRED graph at San Francisco Tech Pulse.
