STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT:

MAY 1994

Unemployment rates were lower in May 1994 than in the prior month in
23 states, higher in 17 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged
in 10 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of
Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 6.0 percent in
May, down from 6.4 percent in April. Employment on nonfarm payrolls was
higher in May than in April in 40 states.
State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted)
Three states--California, Kansas, and New York--had declines of 1
percentage point or more in their unemployment rates from April to May. Of
the three, New York had the largest change, dropping 1.7 percentage points
to 6.5 percent. Eight additional states had declines ranging from 0.5 to
1.0 percentage point. No state had an increase of as much as 0.5
percentage point. (See table 1.) West Virginia was the only state with an
unemployment rate above 8.5 percent, while 16 states had rates of 4.9
percent and below. (See chart 1.)
Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)
Over-the-month increases in payroll employment continued in May, with
gains in 40 states. The largest percentage increase occurred in West

Virginia (1.6 percent); this stemmed in large part from temporary hiring of
election officials. Strong monthly job growth continued in Arizona, New
Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota, and Utah. Most of the monthly increase took
place in the service-producing sector, with transportation and public
utilities (due to the end of the trucking strike) and services increasing
in four-fifths of the states and trade and government in about two-thirds.
Construction employment also increased in about two-thirds of the states.
-------------------------------------------------------------|
State and area labor force data beginning in January 1994 |
|are not directly comparable with data for 1993 and prior years|
|as a result of the introduction of the redesigned Current
|
|Population Survey. Data comparisons also are affected by the |
|incorporation of 1990 census-based population controls and
|
|other methodological changes. These changes are described in |
|greater detail in "Revisions in State and Area Estimates
|
|Effective January 1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment |
|and Earnings.
|
-------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Between May 1993 and May 1994, payroll employment increased in 48
states, and 30 of these had increases of 2 percent or more. The largest
percentage increases occurred in Nevada (7.4 percent), Utah (6.7 percent),
and Idaho (5.7 percent). The only declines were recorded in Hawaii (-2.2
percent), the District of Columbia (-1.0 percent), and California (-0.5
percent). (See chart 2.)
Employment in the services industry was up over the past year in every
state except Hawaii, and over four-fifths had increases of 2 percent or
more. Construction employment rose in over four-fifths of the states; 11
had increases of 10 percent or more. Manufacturing gains were reported in
30 states, located primarily in the Mountain and Central divisions of the
nation. Trade employment increased in all states except Connecticut,
California, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. Nevada and Utah have
consistently ranked among the top growth states in nearly every industry.
NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a
seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia,
permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data.
The state data are intended for individual state analyses only.
Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a
summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See
Technical Note.)
Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Of the 262 areas for which May data are available, 20 areas had
unemployment rates higher than 8.5 percent, while 106 had rates below 5.0
percent. Modesto, Calif., had the highest reported unemployment rate (14.5
percent), followed by McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex. (14.2 percent). The
lowest rates were in Sioux Falls, S.D. (1.9 percent), followed by FargoMoorhead, N.D.-Minn., and Madison, Wis. (both 2.0 percent).

The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release
for June 1994 will be issued on Tuesday, August 2, 1994.

news release, except for Puerto Rico.
p/ = preliminary.
NOTE: Data refer to place of residence. Data for
Puerto Rico are derived from a monthly household survey
similar to the Current Population Survey. Data, beginning
1994, are not directly comparable with those for 1993
and prior years as a result of the redesign of the CPS.

In addition, data comparisons are affected by the
incorporation of new population controls and other
methodological changes. For additional information,
see "Revisions in State and Area Estimates Effective
January 1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment
and Earnings.

1/ Published earlier in The Employment Situation
news release, except for Puerto Rico.
p/ = preliminary.

1/ Includes interstate portion of area located in
adjacent state.
2/ Data are obtained directly from the Current
Population Survey.
C = corrected.
p/ = preliminary.

NOTE:
Data refer to place of residence. Data,
beginning 1994, are not directly comparable with those for
1993 and prior years as a result of the redesign of the CPS.
In addition, data comparisons are affected by the
incorporation of new population controls and other
methodological changes. For addititional information, see
"Revisions in State and Area Estimates Effective January
1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment and Earnings.
