STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT:
                                 JUNE 1996

Unemployment rates in most states were little changed in June, the
Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.
Forty-three states recorded changes of 0.3 percentage point or less. The
national jobless rate dropped to 5.3 percent in June from 5.6 percent in
May. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 39 states in June.

State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted)

Unemployment rates were lower in June than in the previous month in 23
states and the District of Columbia, higher in 17 states, and unchanged in
10 states. The District of Columbia posted the largest decrease, dropping
a full percentage point to 8.0 percent. Four states (Alabama, Mississippi,
Pennsylvania, and Nevada) reported decreases in their jobless rates of more
than 0.5 percentage point. In addition, four of the states that had small
over-the-month declines--Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin--reported
rates that were the lowest in their series (which began in 1978). The only
unemployment rates that increased by more than 0.5 percentage point were in
Alaska (up 0.7 point to 7.5 percent) and South Carolina (up 0.6 point to
6.0 percent).

Over the year, 36 states and the District of Columbia recorded
unemployment rate declines, while 12 states showed increases. Rhode Island
had the largest drop, as its rate fell 2.5 percentage points to 4.7
percent. Alabama (down 1.7 points), the District of Columbia (down 1.1
points), and Michigan (down 1.0 point) had the next largest declines.
Rates in 17 additional states decreased by 0.5 point or more. South
Carolina registered the largest rise over the year, as its rate climbed 1.0
percentage point to 6.0 percent. The only other state to exhibit an over-
the-year increase of as much as 0.5 percentage point was New Mexico, as its
jobless rate rose 0.7 point to 7.0 percent.

South Dakota recorded the lowest unemployment rate in June, 2.8 percent.
Nebraska had the second lowest rate, 3.0 percent, followed by Iowa and
North Dakota, both at 3.1 percent. Four other states registered
unemployment rates of less than 4.0 percent. At 8.0 percent, the District
of Columbia again had the highest jobless rate, followed by Alaska (7.5
percent), West Virginia (7.3 percent), California (7.1 percent), and New
Mexico (7.0 percent). Overall, 34 states posted unemployment rates below
that of the U.S., while 13 states and the District of Columbia had higher
rates.

Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)

Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 39 states in June. New Mexico
reported the largest percentage increase (1.1 percent), followed by Nevada,
Alaska, and Utah. California added the most jobs over the month (32,800),
while Texas (20,000) and Florida (18,500) also had sizable increases. More
than three-fourths of the states reported gains in trade and services.
West Virginia reported the largest percentage decline in employment(-1.1
percent), followed by Nebraska (-0.6 percent). A significant portion of
West Virginia's loss was attributable to a layoff of temporary poll workers
who were hired for a primary election in May.

Over the year, nonfarm employment increased in 49 states. California
led the nation in over-the-year job growth (307,500), followed by Texas
(255,400) and Florida (176,900). Nevada and Utah continued to lead the
nation in growth rates, posting increases of 8.0 and 6.2 percent,
respectively. In contrast, Hawaii and the District of Columbia lost jobs
in the past year. (See chart 2.)

NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally
adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both
current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are
intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are
not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a
misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.)

Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Of the 272 areas for which June data are available, 73 had unemployment
rates below 4.0 percent, while 40 had rates of 7.0 percent or higher. The
lowest rate was in Sioux Falls, S.D. (1.7 percent), followed by Madison,
Wis. (1.8 percent), and Des Moines, Iowa (2.1 percent). At 19.5 percent,
McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex., had the highest unemployment rate, followed
by Laredo, Tex. (15.1 percent), and Modesto, Calif. (15.0 percent). Over
the year, Laredo experienced the largest drop in its jobless rate (3.4
percentage points), followed by two areas in Alabama--Mobile (2.4 points)
and Montgomery (2.2 points). Rates in 37 other areas declined by 1.0
percentage point or more. Dubuque, Iowa, had the largest over-the-year
increase, as its rate climbed 2.6 points, followed by Tyler, Tex. up 2.3
points, and El Paso, Tex., and Peoria-Pekin, Ill., both up 2.1 points. Two
other areas posted rate increases of 1.0 percentage point or more. (See
table 5.)
