EDT Wednesday, June 1, 1994 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: APRIL 1994 Unemployment rates were lower in April than in the prior month in 27 states and the District of Columbia, higher in 20 states, and unchanged in 3 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in April, compared with 6.5 in both March and February. Employment on nonfarm payrolls was higher in April than in March in 41 states. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) The unemployment rates in the District of Columbia and four states-North Dakota, Rhode Island, Texas, and West Virginia--had declines of 1 percentage point or more from March to April. In contrast, California, with a 1 percentage point increase, was the only state to have a sizable increase in its unemployment rate. (See table 1.) California and West Virginia had rates above 8.5 percent in April, while 15 states had rates of 4.9 percent or less. (See map 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Over-the-month increases in payroll employment continued in April, with gains posted in 41 states. Most of these increases were small, as only nine states had gains of 0.5 percent or more. The largest percentage increases occurred in Delaware, New Mexico, and Maine--all about 1.0 percent. The trade and services industries had increases in four-fifths of the states; finance, insurance, and real estate and government rose in about two-thirds. (See table 3.) Payroll employment increased in 48 states between April 1993 and April 1994. Increases were 2 percent or more in 29 states. The largest percentage increases occurred in Nevada (7.2 percent), Utah (6.7 percent), and Idaho (6.2 percent). The only declines were recorded in the District of Columbia (-1.5 percent), Hawaii (-1.5 percent), and California (-0.5 percent). (See map 2.) Construction employment was up over the year in over four-fifths of the states, with nine states having increases in excess of 10 percent. Manufacturing gains were reported in 31 states, located primarily in the Central and Mountain divisions of the nation. Trade employment increased in all states except California, Connecticut, and Hawaii and in the District of Columbia. Services employment increased in all but one state, Hawaii. (See table 3.) NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) - 2 Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 261 areas for which April data are available, 23 areas had unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or higher, while 99 had rates below 5.0 percent. Modesto, Calif., had the highest unemployment rate (17.1 percent), followed by Fresno, Calif. (14.9 percent), and Bakersfield, Calif. (14.6 percent). The lowest rates were in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. (1.9 percent), Sioux Falls, S.D. (2.0 percent), and Iowa City, Iowa (2.2 percent).
