ABSTRACT: This document serves as the technical appendix to the 2012 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice administered by the RAND Corporation. The Diary of Consumer Payment Choice (DCPC) is a study designed primarily to collect data on financial transactions over a three day period by consumers over the age of 18 in the United States. In this data report, we detail the technical aspects of the survey design, implementation, and analysis.
Key Findings
The technical appendix does the following:

  • Establishes the context and goals of the survey
  • Discusses two pilot studies conducted in 2010 and 2011, focusing on a few key findings relating to survey methodology that influenced the implementation of the 2012 DCPC
  • Details the sample selection strategy for the DCPC and presents statistics concerning diary response and completion
  • Delineates the methodology used to generate sample weights that can be used to generate estimates for the population of U.S. consumers
  • Describes the preprocessing done to produce the public use dataset
  • Presents the statistical methodology used for generating population estimates based on the DCPC data.

Implications
Providing a detailed technical appendix is intended to enable users of the DCPC data and researchers who study the results and approach of the 2012 DCPC understand and interpret more completely exactly what the data are and what the results indicate.
