WIRE EMBARGO UNTIL
10:00 A.M. (EDT) FRIDAY,
OCTOBER 14, 1994

REAL EARNINGS IN SEPTEMBER 1994
Real average weekly earnings rose 0.4 percent from August
to September after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data
released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S.
Department of Labor. This rise stemmed from a 0.3 percent increase
in average hourly earnings coupled with a 0.3 percent increase in
average weekly hours. These gains were partially offset by a 0.1
percent rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners
and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).
Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll
reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both
full-time and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory
jobs are included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated
by adjusting earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W.
Average weekly earnings rose by 3.5 percent between September
of 1993 and 1994 as a result of a 2.7 percent increase in average
hourly earnings and a 0.9 percent increase in average weekly
hours. After adjustment for a 3.0 percent gain in the CPI-W
over the same period, real average weekly earnings rose by 0.5
percent. Before adjustment for seasonal change and deflation by
the CPI-W, average weekly earnings were $389.76 in September 1994,
compared with $376.40 a year earlier.
