                     REAL EARNINGS IN MAY 1996

Real average weekly earnings declined by 0.1 percent between April
and May after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data
released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department
of Labor. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.3 percent, and
the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical
Workers (CPI-W) rose by 0.3 percent. Average weekly hours were
unchanged in May.

Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll
reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both full-time
and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory jobs are
included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated by adjusting
earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W.

Average weekly earnings rose by 3.6 percent between May of 1995
and 1996 as a result of a 3.3 percent increase in average hourly
earnings and a 0.3 percent increase in average weekly hours. After
adjustment for a 2.9 percent gain in the CPI-W over the same period,
real average weekly earnings rose by 0.7 percent. Before adjustment
for seasonal change and deflation by the CPI-W, average weekly earnings
were $402.68 in May 1996, compared with $388.51 a year earlier.
