Digitized for -FRASER https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Page 14 EXPLANATORY NOTES To be most useful, data for the Southeastern states should be strictly comparable with similar estimates for the United States. Consequently, the estimates for the Southeastern states have been modeled after the national estimates that have been prepared for some years by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (Savings and Home Financing Source Book, 1964, Washington, D. C., June 1964). The nature of the data, however, has necessitated certain modifications in both the national and state estimates presented here. Holdings of United States savings bonds included in the Home Loan Bank series are excluded in this series from both the state estimates and the United States figures since it was found impracticable to allocate holdings by states. Deposits at mutual savings banks are included in the national figures under the heading "Commercial Banks" but are excluded from the state figures because mutual savings banks do not operate in the Southeastern states. There is also a slight difference in the commercial bank figures used in these estimates from those prepared by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. In the interest of comparability, state and national figures for this series have been brought into conformity with each other. Consequently, the U. S. data presented here also differ slightly from those published by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. Savings and Loan Associations. The data represent the value of repurchasable shares, both state and Federal. Since share data by state were unavailable for the years 1930 through 1936, estimates for these years were made from data on total assets obtained from the United States Savings and Loan League by using the ratio between total share holdings and assets on a national basis. Data for the years since 1937 were obtained from the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Page 15 (Continued) Commercial Banks. The data include total time deposits at commercial and mutual savings banks for individuals, partnerships, and corporations as published by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in All-Bank Statistics, United States, 1896-1955 and in current releases. savings banks also are included. Time deposits at mutual Interpolation was used to secure a year-end figure for the U. S. for 1930-37 and for each state for 1930-42 since figures were available for a June date only. Postal Savings. were available. Interpolation was used to provide year-end figures since only end-of-fiscal-year figures The state figures as obtained from the Bureau of Finance of the U. S. Post Office Department covered only the credits to depositors’ accounts and excluded the value of postal savings bonds issued in 1935. Thus to raise the data to a level comparable with the national figure a ratio of U. S. postal savings deposits to total deposits plus the value of postal savings bonds was employed. Credit Unions. The state data were secured from the Credit Union National Association and the national data from the Savings and Home Financing Source Book. Reserves of Life Insurance Companies. Data represent the equity of policyholders residing in each of the Southeastern states in the reserves and dividends left to accumulate after premium notes and policy loans were deducted (Life Insurance Fact Book, New York Annuals, 1948-63). Since no comparable estimates are available by state, they were derived by first computing a ratio of life insurance in force in each state to the total for the United States and then applying these ratios to national estimates of equities. Data on life insurance in force were obtained from the Spectator Yearbook. Population. Population figures used in the per capita estimates were obtained from the United States Department of Commerce, Population Estimates, Series P-25. https://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Page 16
