The seasonally adjusted index of department store-sales for December is
estimated at 116 per cent of the 1957-59 average. This is two points belovr the
all-time high reached in November, but a record for the month of December itself.
For the year 1962 as a whole, sales increased 4 per cent over 1961.

*—The large percentage changes shown for this week are due mainly to the fact
that Christmas this year fell on Tuesday, giving the.week one pre-Christmas shopping day compared with none in the corresponding week last year.
