Note:—These f i g u r e s are not estimates f o r a l l department s t o r e s in the United
S t a t e s . They are the actual dollar amounts reported by a group of department
stores located i n various c i t i e s throughout the country. In 1955, sales by
these s t o r e s accounted f o r about 50 per cent of estimated t o t a l department
store s a l e s . Figures f o r the most recent thirteen-month period are shown
r e g u l a r l y i n the Bulletijn. For description and back d a t a , January 1939 t o
