P r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s on t h e v a l u e of department s t o r e s a l e s show an i n c r e a s e
from August to September of l e s s t h a n t h e e s t i m a t e d seasonal amount, The F e d e r a l
Reserve B o a r d ' s index, which makes allowance b o t h f o r number of b u s i n e s s days and
f o r u s u a l s e a s o n a l changes, was 70 i n September on t h e b a s i s of t h e I923-I925 a v e r age a s 100, compared w i t h 77 i n August and "JO i n J u l y ,
In comparison w i t h a y e a r ago, t h e v a l u e of s a l e s f o r September a c c o r d i n g to
p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was 2 p e r cent l a r g e r . The a g g r e g a t e f o r t h e f i r s t n i n e months
of t h e y e a r was 9 p e r cent s m a l l e r than l a s t y e a r ,
