The F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s i n d e x , which makes allowance b o t h f o r number of b u s i n e s s days and f o r u s u a l s e a s o n a l changes, was 6g i n A p r i l on t h e b a s i s of t h e I923-I.925 average a s 100, compared w i t h 55 * n March and bO i n F e b r u a r y . In comparison w i t h a y e a r ago t h e v a l u e of s a l e s f o r A p r i l , according t o p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was 9 p e r c e n t smaller.. In making the comparison w . t h a y e a r ago, allowance should be made f o r t h e f a c t t h a t the d a t e of E a s t e r , which was v e r y e a r l y l a s t y e a r (March 27)was l a t e t h i s y e a r ( A p r i l l 6 ) , and t h a t cons e q u e n t l y t h i s y e a r s a l e s during A p r i l i n c l u d e d a much l a r g e r p a r t of E a s t e r buying than t h e y d i d l a s t y e a r . The a g g r e g a t e f o r t h e f i r s t f o u r months of the y e a r was 22 p e r c e n t s m a l l e r than l a s t y e a r .
